David Russell

David Russell is world famous for his outstanding technique on the instrument and his effortless performance of works at the highest level. Born in Glasgow to a painter couple, but from the age of seven Russell grew up in Es Migjorn Gran, Menorca. 

 

He studied with Hector Quine at the Royal Academy of Music in London, among others, and won numerous international guitar competitions, including the Francisco Tarrega Competition in 1977, the Andres Segovia Competition, the José Ramarez Competition, and twice the Julian Bream Guitar Prize.

 

Russell has recorded more than 20 albums to date and won the 2005 Grammy in the category for Best Solo Instrument Performance without Orchestra with Aire Latino. In his recordings, Russell covers a wide range of classical guitar music from the Renaissance to contemporary compositions. In addition to his recordings, Russell has made numerous editions and arrangements of works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Enrique Granados, and Isaac Albaniz, which have contributed significantly to the development of modern classical guitar playing.
